Entry 3 - Lê Thái Hằng

Item 1 : Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Description :
The advert features a young woman who walks into the library and orders food. After the librarian tells her that it is just a library, she looks around and seems to realize the place. However, much to everybody’s surprise, she just lowers her voice and repeat what she just said.

Stereotype.


Identifying bias:



This shows the stereotype of ‘dumb blonde’ which presents that beautiful young women are usually stupid. This idea together with their slogan ‘Beauty is nothing without brain’ reinforces this stereotype.



Item 2 : St. Pauli Girl beverage

This advertisement portraits a sexy girl figure with body of beer and head of foam and the slogan “You Never Forget Your First Girl”

Sexism


Identifying bias:
     The ad is definitely not talking about a man being with one girl, but it says "first girl", which  means that there likely have been others since, describing a situation when women are just men’s entertainer, just like a good beer. The woman is faceless in this ad, probably because the face doesn't really matter, indicates that women’s characters do not really matter to men; however, the ad is sure to include the low cut of her short dress, obviously claims that only her sexual side matters as for man.


Item 3 :1.      Pond’s White Beauty – Pond’s TV Commercial in India


Description :
The commercial tells a story of an Indian girl losing her boy friend because of her icky brown complexion. After that, she tries to whiten her skin with Pond and finally wins the man back.

Types of bias :

This advert holds both sexism prejudice and racism discrimination.
- Sexism: The man plays the main role deciding to finish the relationship and he is also the one who recovers it. The girl is only a run-after. Love of the girl is not counted on for the man’s decision but her appearance, her new blade complexion.
- Racism: The brown Indian girl loses her love due to her skin. The commercial assumes that
“If you are not white enough, you will not have the love of your dreams”.

    - item 1: in my opinion, it's prejudice because all details in this ad show a negative judgments about beautiful young women which is all of them are stupid
    - item 2 really impress me. your analyzing is very good :)
