Entry 3_Bùi Thanh Nga

Entry 3: Bias Detection
Item 1: Picture

-         Type of bias:  stereotype.
-         Analysis: the picture shows the difference in one aspect between different cultures. It is thought that people from European countries are punctual. In contrast, Asian people are considered as not giving prominence to punctuality. Actually, it is only an opinion without regard to individual differences. It is just an image of a group. Not everyone in Asian countries act like that.

Item 2:  Article

Manchester United: Deserved Winners or Just Plain Lucky???

"Manchester United's boss Ferguson had commented "They are lucky with that," referring to Liverpool's luck although in a completely different aspect. He further expressed his wish to be lucky as them.
……………….
The match started with Liverpool creating waves of attack and Manchester just fending them off somehow. Within five minutes from the start, Torres put the Reds' ahead capitalising on some sloppy defending by United's defenders.
…………………
Apart from luck they also have the favor of match officials.
…………………
Arsenal, on Saturday night was again the victim of lousy refereeing which saw Vermaelen sent off. Chelsea are proven to be not "referee favourites" in EPL or the Champions League.
……………….
Manchester United fans may opine that they are not only a "lucky" team but also a good team. But that will not change the truth that Manchester United are one hell of a "lucky" team. After today's match maybe next time on Fergie will not be whining about other teams being "lucky".

-         Type of bias: prejudice
-         Analysis:
+ “they are lucky with that”: in a match, a lot of things affect the result. It is bias to say that. It is just his own opinion. The judgement is without knowledge of the fact.
+ “just fending them off”, “sloppy”, “Apart from luck they also have the favor of match officials”: negative judgement about Manchester United, not mentioning their ability.
+ Arsenal “again the victim of lousy refereeing”, Chelsea: not "referee favourites" => give the contrast opinion, it means that the writer does not support Manchester United.
+ “one hell of lucky team”, “whining”: use negative word to express favoritism => bias.

Item 3: Article

Ugandan paper calls for gay people to be hanged

Gay people named in article face violence and abuse after newspaper claims they are recruiting children.

Human rights activists have warned that the lives of gay people in Uganda are in danger, after a newspaper published a story featuring the names and in some cases photographs of 100 homosexuals under the headline "Hang Them".
At least one woman named in the story has been forced to leave her home after neighbours pelted it with stones, while several other people have been verbally abused, according to the campaign group Sexual Minorities Uganda.
………………………

On the front page, the paper claims that the homosexual community aims to "recruit 1,000,000 children by 2012", and that parents "face heart-breaks [sic] as homos raids schools". Inside, a headline reads: "Hang them; They are after our kids!!" The article lists personal details of those named, including their addresses. There are also photographs of about a dozen people listed in the story.

-         Type of bias: discrimination, scapegoating
-         Analysis:
+ Discrimination: The homosexual in Uganda are treated in an unfavorable way. People have a lot of actions to show their discrimination: names and photographs published in the newspaper, being forced to leave home, being called to be hanged…
+ Scapegoating: the homosexual are blamed to affect badly to children. People claim that the homosexual community aims to recruit children. In fact, not all in homosexual community have to be responsible for this problem. They are isolated.
