Entry 4 - Nguyễn Thị Vân Anh

Item1:   “The next time you wake up in the morning I want you to say, “I am go glad to be alive! I love me! I am so happy with my life! This will be a great day!”
If you don’t say those things, or something similar, you will end up feeling lousy and looking unhappy! Repeat that negative routine and it will become a part of you”
Analyzing:
When waking up in the morning, saying  “I am go glad to be alive! I love me! I am so happy with my life! =>This will be a great day!”
Don’t say those things or something similar => ending up feeling lousy and looking unhappy = having unhappy day
Structural Fallacy: If A, then B
Not A
Therefore Not B
This fallacy is invalid
Content Fallacy: hasty fallacy, because having many things creates a great day. It cannot be just depended on one speech in the morning and vice versa.

Item 2:
If you hate Slippery Slope arguments, you will do poorly in class.
If you do poorly in class, you will drop out of school.
If you drop out of school, you will commit crimes
If you commit crime, you will go to prison.
If you go to prison, you will die of AIDS.
–>  Slippery Slope
Analyzing: The process of inference:
If you hate Slippery Slope arguments (hidden premise: Students who hate Slippery Slope argument will do purely in class –> factual error)
————>>  You will do poorly in class (hidden premise: Students who do poorly in class will drop out of chool –> factual error)
————>>   You will drop out of school (hidden premise: People who drop out of school will commit crimes –> factual error)
————>>  You will commit crimes (hidden premise: People who commit crimes will go to prison –> factual error)
————>>  You will go to prison (hidden premise: People who go to prison will die of AIDS –> factual error)
————>>  You will die of AIDS
We see that the funny inferences above are put in order like a sequence of increasingly untrue premises. Consequently, the conclusions seem to be so unreasonable and unacceptable.
Item 3:     You should never gamble. Once you start gambling you find it hard to stop. Soon you are spending all your money on gambling, and eventually you will turn to crime to support your earnings.
Analyzing:
Start gambling
↓ Hidden Premise: Gambling addiction is inevitable
=> Find it hard to stop
=> Spend all money on gambling
↓ Hidden Premise: U earn money by committing crimes
=> Turn to crime to support gambling
The above argument simply shows the unfavorable escalation of the events without a clear explanation or justification of how all the sequences occur and operate .
=> Content Fallacy – Fallacies of Presumption  Slippery slope

  1. Dear Vân Anh,
I think you should have a look at Thanh Hoa's entry No.4, item 1.

  2. Thank you for your entry. You analyzed carefully in three items. Specially, You showed slippery slope clearly such as step by step analysis. However, in my opinion, you should choose argument structures and fallacies diversely. You should not choose two source about slippery slope.

  3. You did a very detailed analysis. However, I agree with Chinh that items in your entry seem to be similar. It will be much better if you choose others to diversify the fallacies. Thank you!
