Entry 4_Nguyen Thuy Hien
                                                       ENTRY 4
                                    Argument Structures and Fallacies
   Item 1:
Rằng tôi chút phận đàn bà
Ghen tuông thì cũng người ta thường tình
(Truyện Kiều –Nguyễn Du)

- Analysis: Argument structure: direct way of reasoning with almost all

 Đàn bà thường hay ghen
 Tôi là đàn bà
…………………………..
Tôi cũng ghen

Almost all S are P
a is S
………………………………
Therefore a is P

In these two poem sentences, Hoan Thu argues that she is a woman, and women are often jealous in love, therefore she is jealous is a common thing. However, her argument has bias that women are jealous, but in reality not all most of women are jealous. This argument is appeal to popularity.

Item 2

-Structural fallacy: Denying the antecedent.

If Japp chocolate bar gives him extra, then the young man is strong is strong
The old man doesn't eat Japp chocolate bar
……………………………………………………
Therefore he is weak

If A, then B
Not  A
………………………………………..
Therefore, not B

Item 3:

Argument error: content fallacy:

-fallacy of relevance-making of relevance- appealing to  popularity
9 out of 10 say Office 2010 is the best Office release ever means Office 2010 is the best. This rate is not convincible enough.

-fallacy of ambiguity
the general rate (9/10) is not clearly informed. Viewers do not know 10 here means the number of people who have already used Office 10 or the number of people who own computers or the population of the world or any number else.

  2. I have a little wonder with the video. It does not reflect that the old man does not eat the chocolate bar. He just wants to do exercise. Unfortunately, the young man misunderstands that he wants to pull the car down of the mountain. Thanks.
