Entry 4 - Bùi Thanh Nga

ENTRY 4:
Argument Structures and Fallacies

                   Item 1:

Analyze:  False dilemma
The argument just presents 2 options: “ tất cả bọn tao đánh mày” and “ mày đánh tất cả tụi tao”. (In deed, it is one option). In reality, there are more options to choose: no fighting, discussing,…

Item 2:
An adversiment of Toshiba TV set.
Analyze: Appeal to popular ( Fallacy of relevance)
In this advertisement, a lot of people are asked, all of them answer: “ Tôi có một power”. Those people vary in places (Ha Noi – Hue – Ho Chi Minh), ages, careers, genders,… At the end of the advertisement, many people say unanimously: “ Tôi yêu Toshiba”. It proves that this product is popular. Many people use this. And you should also do that.
Item 3:

          Wedding color

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?"

"Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life," her mother tried to explain, keeping it simple.

The child thought about this for a moment, then said.... "So why is the groom wearing black?"
Analyze:
-         White is the color of happiness
-         Groom is in black
-         White is opposite to black
ð    the darkest day of groom
ð    False premises ( Fallacy of presumption)
-         Mother explained: white is the color of happiness -> it is not always true.
-         Children thought : white is opposite to black in all cases -> it is not true.
The argument includes 2 false premises.

    1. Here are some of my comments:
Item 1: have a good job
Item 2:- Appeal to popular (Fallacy of relevance)
      - Weak analogy (Fallacy of relevance)
Because in Hanoi, Tang Thanh Ha interviews the passers
in Hue, She interviews the students
in HCM, She interviews the workers
These people do different jobs and come from other places.
      Item3: It’s ok

  2. Good choices!
Three items are all easy to see the fallacies; they are interesting as well. The second item is okay, I think, but the first one is not.
In my opinion, it's not only false dilemma, it is also slippery slope and some kind of presumption.
“- Mày qua đây làm gì? Muốn đánh nhau à? Giờ mày muốn solo hay đánh hội đồng?”
Qua đây => muốn đánh nhau => solo hay hội đồng
    Thanks
