Item 1: Picture
-
Identifying bias: Prejudice.
-
Analysis: The picture tells a short story that a student is
coming to the library to look for copies of the New York Times but he is
turning so embarrassed with the strange response of the librarian that “that
would be in fiction section”. Readers can realize that the woman in the story
keeps her high prejudice about the New York Times. As we know, the "New
York Times" newspaper is famous worldwide as a reliable publication and
source for truthful information. The female Librarian neither likes this
newspaper nor agrees that this newspaper is factual so her opinion has been
expressed in a negative way.
ITEM 2: Quote
“Poverty is the mother of crime”
– Marcus Aurelius -
-
Identifying bias: Scapegoating.
-
Analysis: this saying is a scapegoating in which poverty is blamed for
crime. Many people have negative thought of the poor that because they do not
have much money, they will ready do anything even steal or do something
illegally in order to have money. However, not every the poor is a criminal.
Many crimes are committed almost exclusively by rich people such as cheating on
taxes, accepting bribe, embezzlement, etc. Therefore, poverty cannot be blamed
for the cause of crime.
Item 3: Joke/ Story
In a small town, there was a big factory that hired only married
men. Upset, a local woman called on the manager and asked him, “Why is it you
limit your employees to married men? Is it because you think women are weak,
dumb, cantankerous or what?” “Not at all, Ma’am,” the manager replied. “It is
because our employees are used to obeying orders and have learned to keep their
mouths shut when I yell at them.”
-
Identifying bias:
Prejudice and Gender Discrimination
- Analysis:
The joke given above is very funny. More than the meaning of entertaining, the
readers can see some details that obviouly imply the prejudice about women. The
response of the manager is a clear explaination why the factory limits their
employees to married men. The sentence he said (“It is because our employees
are used to obeying orders and have learned to keep their mouths shut when I
yell at them.”) means, women, in contrast to married men, never know how to
obey orders as well as keep themselves patient. These bad characteristics of
women prevent them from getting the job. As a result, the local women in this
joke suffer a strong discrimination. They even do not have a chance to work in
a big factory.
firstly, thank you for your entry. Your entries are impressive owing to a lots careful analysis. But in my opinion, entry 1 is stereotypes. because all details did not show negative prejudice about New York Time and the negative way she expressed is only her personality
Trả lờiXóathank you for your entry. it is good that your entry consists of 3 types of bias. However, i have to say that you're absolutely wrong in the second item. You misunderstood the meaning of the saying "poverty is the mother of crime". Poverty, here, is not the poor. Poverty is the state of being poor; so the saying doesn't blame for the poor!!
Trả lờiXóaas for the third item, it is just the gender discrimination, not prejudice because the man's prejudice is turned into his action. So, it is gender discrimination only.
