Identifying Bias

1.     Item 1: Cần có cái nhìn rộng mở hơn với đồng tính nữ

Một nghiên cứu của Viện được thực hiện trong năm 2009 với sự tham gia của 40 lesbian tại Hà Nội (từ 19 đến hơn 30 tuổi) và cha mẹ của họ cũng cho thấy, nhiều người vẫn coi đồng tính luyến ái, dù là đồng tính nam hay nữ, rằng yêu một người cùng giới là xấu.

"Có cha mẹ nghĩ đến chuyện đưa con vào trại giống như con bị nghiện hay làm điều gì không đúng. Thậm chí có người cho rằng con mình trở thành như thế này là do ảnh hưởng lối sống của phương Tây, do tiếp xúc với xã hội thông tin hiện đại", chị Nam cho biết.

-Prejudice and scapegoating

- Analysis:

+ prejudice:  “đồng tính luyến ái, dù là đồng tính nam hay nữ, rằng yêu một người cùng giới là xấu.”

 Some people judge that the homosexuality (gays and lesbians) is a disea evil. However, during the 1980s and 1990s, most developed countries enacted laws decriminalizing homosexual behavior and prohibiting discrimination against lesbian and gay people in employment, housing, and services, even in Vietnam there was a law for heterosexual or bisexual people in 2008. Therefore, homosexuality is bad

          + Scapegoating: “con mình trở thành như thế này là do ảnh hưởng lối sống của phương Tây, do tiếp xúc với xã hội thông tin hiện đại.”

There are many reasons for becoming the heterosexual or bisexual people. Not only did the young affect the life style of Westerner or the modern media (environmental factors) but homosexuality is formed by genetics, hormonal factors. As a result, the statement is an unfair blame for environmental factor.

-      Stereotype

-      Analysis:  magazine covers show the typical features of Latina, African American, Asian and Caucasian women.

Item 3

1 in 4 women report being denied a job because of their gender

 

·         One in 4 Chinese women says they were denied a job because they are female, according to a broad survey. 28% report dealing with employers who set different requirements based on gender for the same job.

·         The findings, from a survey of 3,000 women, found that more than 1 in 5 women said employers cut women’s salaries when they had children, with 1 in 9 reporting losing their jobs for having a baby.

 

-      Discrimination

-      Analysis: it is clear that women do not have equal benefits in work as men.  They are treated unfairly such as: being cut their salaries, refused a job due to their gender.
